Top Television Picks: Seven Essential Films This Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore delivers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity reduced to starring in a workout series on television. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying process titled the Substance. This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. October 17th, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a hiatus from covering global conflict to join a luxury cruise accompanied by a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, and other extremely wealthy individuals. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unconventional method comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has made the local kids frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by the actor's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a traitor inside the organization from five suspects – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of deception or honesty develops. Additional actors participate the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
