Christantus Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved no match even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
